The Christian population was clearly seen as an inferior body of people, and Pope Paul III (1534-1549) added to the duplicity of the Vatican when he said that ‘there is no valid document to demonstrate the existence of Jesus Christ’, supplementing the understanding that Christianity is a fraud by saying that ‘Jesus Christ had never existed’ (Diego Hurtago de Mendoza (1503-75), Ambassador of Spain, recorded in the Minutes of a Vatican meeting with Pope Paul III).
